The WPCA has been working closely with the City of Red Deer to design a multi-generational, community park in the greenspace southwest of the West Park Shopping Centre.
The City has approved a detailed plan for the park and it is now up to the community association, and the West Park community, to raise the funds to make this plan become a reality.

Phase 2 of Development
Phase 2 of West Park Gardens includes the development of trails, a natural amphitheatre, a food forest, and more.
When this phase is complete, West Park Gardens will become the hub of the neighbourhood, with opportunity for socializing, physical recreation, and accessing healthy food.

The proposed natural amphitheatre next to the gazebo will mean that a wide variety of public performances and other community events will be able to take place. The paved trail at West Park Gardens will allow those with limited mobility to access the wheelchair accessible gazebo and picnic tables.
Phase 2 of the park will get people active as well. The paved trails, periphery trails, enhanced sledding hill, and outdoor games area will help to accomplish this goal. People of a variety of ages and abilities will be able to enjoy the park throughout the year. In addition to the existing community garden at West Park Gardens, Phase 2 includes planting a food forest. Having publicly accessible fruit trees and shrubs will be beneficial for anyone wanting a healthy snack. With the trails, new trees, park furniture, and gazebo, West Park Gardens will be a great place for a picnic or a nice walk. |
Depending on fundraising and grant applications, the WPCA is hoping to complete Phase 2 of the project in the fall of 2023.
Features of Phase 2Fundraising Goal: $28,000
(total Phase 2 budget: $205,500)

Previous Park DevelopmentsPrevious developments on the green space where West Park Gardens will be include a community garden and a Little Free Library.
Over the past five years, community volunteers have worked to expand the community garden on 3 occasions (pictured). There are now 29 garden boxes for rent (click here to learn more). We believe that our community volunteers and donors will continue to make our neighbourhood an amazing place to live! |

Phase 1 of Development - Complete!
Phase 1 of West Park Gardens included the construction of a gazebo and the development of the area surrounding it. Thanks in part to generous donors in the neighbourhood, we were able to reach our funding goal. The gazebo was completed in January of 2023.
The gazebo itself will function as both a shelter and as a stage next to a natural amphitheatre. Additionally, there is a concrete pad extending out from the roofed area of the gazebo, providing extra space for things like BBQs. Once the paved trail is completed, there will be a ramp connecting it to the gazebo.

The WPCA hopes to organize a more varied selection of community events with the use of the gazebo and the planned amphitheatre.
Events may include having live entertainment at our spring clean-up day; or bringing in an astronomer for a presentation which families and local college students may be interested in; or having a free BBQ as part of an outdoor market. This stage could also be used for local school productions. With benches and tables in the vicinity, the gazebo and the community garden will create an inviting ‘front door’ to the park. While gazebo construction and some landscaping were completed in the fall and winter, additional landscaping as well as the ramp and stairs will be completed in the spring of 2023. |

Donor RecognitionPerhaps you, or someone you know, would consider donating to this project.
The great thing about this cause is that your donation goes straight into improvements in your own neighbourhood! Your involvement in building this new park will be enjoyed by your own family and by your neighbours for years to come. All board members of the community association are volunteers and want to see West Park benefit from your support. The WPCA would be so appreciative if you put some of your annual giving toward the West Park Gardens project this year. The West Park Community Association is a registered non-profit organization (not a charity). A donation receipt will be given, but no tax receipts will be issued for donations to the association. |
All donations to the West Park Gardens project are gratefully appreciated.
Individuals who donate $50 or more to the West Park Gardens project will be recognized on a permanent sign next to the park gazebo. There are 4 donor levels that will be recognized on the sign:
Your donations may also be recognized in someone else’s memory.
